To melt is to change – between an unyielding solid and a shapeless liquid. But to melt is also to surrender – melting into an embrace. To melt, then, can be to feel like that shapeless liquid; to find warmth that affects the body.
Melting! Melting! brings together five artists in a 40ft freezer container. The exhibition presents work that sits between states of transition. Often uncanny and subtle, the exhibition invites audiences to experience before thought, in a show hijacked by sub-zero temperatures. Presenting new works by Glenn Lim, Joo Choon Lin, Mike Hj Chang, Ryan Ben Lee and Vanessa Lim, these cool artists took up the task to create works that explores various registers of warmth in a vessel devoid of such.
The work I exhibited is titled Maps Mobs (a Seasick Sketch). The materials include cardboard tubes, inkjet printing, plaster, paper clay, motor, fabric, stickers. The work depicts a pack of cartoonish mammals encountering a severed head with a knife in its mouth. I was thinking about what would an entropic relationship look like between artist and his work? What would the confrontation look like? And what happens if a system (of art production) falls ill, has fever, and becomes delirious?
